Verbs in past tens and irregular verbs

The terrible twins p. 78

GOAL:     

The purpose of the activity is for learners to read the text and find all the regular verbs and

irregular verbs.

LEARNERS:

Read the story about the funny twins.

Find all the verbs in the past tense.

Use a red pen to underline the regular verbs or write them over on a piece of paper.

Use a blue pen to do the same with the irregular verbs.

PAST TENSE VERBS IN CONTEXT

  • To make most verbs past tense, add –ed to the ending.

        call - called                                      talk -talked  

 

  • When a verb ends in a silent -e, drop the e and add –ed to form the past tense.

        bake - baked                                    hope - hoped  

 

  • When a verb ends in a consonant and y, change the y to i and add –ed.

        carry - carried                                 copy - copied

 

  • When a verb ends in a single consonant after a single short vowel, double the consonant and add ed.                     

        pop - popped                                  stop - stopped
