Active and passive voice

Verbs have both active and passive forms:

active   passive
The hunter killed the lion. > The lion was killed by the hunter.
Someone has cleaned the windows. > The windows have been cleaned.

Passive forms are made up of the verb be with a past participle:

  be past participle  
English is spoken all over the world.
The windows have been cleaned.  
Lunch was being served.  
The work will be finished soon.
They might have been invited to the party.

If we want to show the person or thing doing the action, we use by:

She was attacked by a dangerous dog.

The money was stolen by her husband.

Rewrite the following sentences in the passive voice:

  1. Mr Hoek teaches us grammar.
  2. The teacher praised us.
  3. The firemen took the injured to the hospital.
  4. An earthquake destroyed the town.
  5. The boy’s work pleased the teacher.
  6. The fire damaged the building.
  7. Who taught you English?
  8. The manager will give you a ticket.
  9. Spectators filled the streets.
  10. Everyone will blame us.
  11. The wind blew down the trees.
  12. The police caught the thieves.
  13. Alice posted the letter.
  14. The hostess received us.
