What is a preposition?

Prepositions

Today we are going to learn more about the next part of speech, the preposition.  Remeber in class I said that it is those small, little words that make a sentence make sense by showing the relation between nouns and / or pronouns…

NB!!  Remember – Never end a sentence with a preposition!

  • What is a preposition?

A preposition shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word.

A preposition often shows position (where) or direction (where to…).

  • Examples of prepositions

Above; Across; Through; At; From; Below; Beside; Around; For; Under; Off; After; During; Toward; Behind; On; Between; To; Before; With.

  • A trick for spotting prepositions.

We can often spot prepositions by seeing if they make sense in the following sentence:

The plane flew ___________________ the cloud(s).

{You can use any of the examples of prepositions given above}

e.g. Turn left at the stoplight.

  • Spot the preposition.

The rabbit ran around the house and went back inside its burrow.

Have you ever been to Lebanon?

You should go under your desk if there is an earthquake.

Please sit at the empty desk between your friends.

  • Answers:

Well done!  I know that all of you could find everyone of the prepositions.  Please go and complete the activity on prepositions.
